USA Today: Try It Local spreads Groupon-like deals across the country

Joe’s OK Bayou restaurant uses Try It Local coupons. Owner Joe Wheatley sits with a platter of crawfish. Nearly 120 people thought that was a good deal. So did Joe Wheatley, owner of Joe’s OK Bayou, a staple here since 1995. The deal using email coupons produced $702 for the restaurant and, Wheatley hopes, some new customers.

It was another example of the fast-growing “daily deal” trend of group buying, in which restaurants, salons and other businesses offer huge discounts via email for a limited time, usually within 24 hours or so. The coupons become active only if enough people purchase them within that time, although buyers have several months to redeem them.

The dominant player in the daily deal industry is Chicago-based Groupon. But Wheatley turned to Try It Local, a Louisville-based site launched nine months ago that has spread to 19 other cities around the country, with another 36 in the pipeline.
